Wow, I can see the apartment I use to live in across from the kaserne in Montabaur. I gotta say, the admin building for the 83rd was pretty good especially if you had seen other detachment buildings.

I was at Codogne 1977 to 1978 as a grumpy SP4 supply clerk. It wasn't the best time for the Army. Memories of Vietnam were still raw. I saw a guy in Vicenza wearning a T-shirt that said "Participant 1961 - 1975 Indochina war games -- Second Place".

Bill Engel was the detachment commander when I was there. He went on to make general and commanded White Sands at one point. I ran into him several years later while he was teaching ROTC at Central State University in Oklahoma City.

Keeping in mind the times, there were some weird stories. One of the guys that I replaced was infamous for casually walking into Caserma Ederle wearing cowboy clothes with 10,000 hits of blotter acid tucked into the lining of his hat. It was an an entrepreneurial transaction.

Then there was Reed who called a formation on his last day and burned his boots just as the officers and NCOs were walking up.

I was also there for the 1977 earthquake that killed 1000 people in Udine. We stood outside and watched the wall rock back and forth.

Thanks for the link to the satellite view. I thought I had found it in Google Earth, but I wasn't sure. Lots of changes in 29 years.
