Let me start with the,” Witch of Crailshiem" story as told to me by SP4 Terry Norris who in turn was told to him by an soldier unknown to me. Those of us that did time at Mckee Barracks may remember the hill a few miles behind the back 40 that had a single brown looking house on top of it with a few spares tree. I remember saying something to the affect of "I bet you can get a really good view from up there." I was told, "Never go up there, man." When I asked why not I was told the following story... Back in 1975 or 76' a soldier stationed at Mckee Barracks took a drunken bet to go up to the house on the hill and look in a window to see what really was in there, since it was the reputed home of a witch according to the locals. So the soldier took another swig of courage and off he went. When he got to the top he said he went over to a window and looked in. All he saw was an attractive young girl and an older woman, probably her mother. He drove a few days later to the house and knocked on the door. The girl came out and they struck up a conversation and, well, began going out. Girl gets pregnant and soldier boy tells her to get lost. The older woman who was the girls’ mother came down to the base and was basically told to F-off by the soldier at the gate. The woman said she would put a curse on him if he ever came near the house....Whatever. A few months go by and soldier boy is driving back to base from Onolzheim when he gets to a fork in the road. Car looses control and the car strikes a tree in the fork. Soldier goes out the windshield and strikes the tree with his head and dies instantly. The tree that he hit is at the fork you would take if you were also going to the top of the hill. I was told,” You don't believe me, go check out the tree." Well I did, and yes a car with a soldier did in fact strike the tree, and he was killed on impact, that much is true. But if any witch had anything to do with it is lost to time...Believe it...or not. | ||

If that happened it had to be after June of 1976 as I was stationed at McKee from 1/73 to 6/76 and I don't remember anything of it. Nothing ever happened at McKee that everybody didn't hear about. Now was this soldier from the 2/42 or that infantry unit? |
