I was stationed with the 1/32 FA Lance Bn from 1976 to 1980. I have found three of my former buddies. They are SFC Vincent Terlaje who now lives in Princeton N.J., Spc.Marvin Collins who lives in Dallas Texas and Spc Julian Ballejo who unfortunately was killed in an auto accident in Lubbuck Tx in 1980. I was with C Btry (2nd Fire Section)We last went to Crete in October of 1977. That was the first and last time I saw the Lance fire.

I was stationed at Fliegerhorst Kaserne w/ B 1/32, Svc Btry, the Bn HQ from 1975 to 1978. I was a platoon leader, A&T platoon leader, XO and the Bn recon/survey officer. I got the chance to go to two or three missile firings at the NATO site in Chania (sp?). Great experience!

I got back to visit the Bn area in either '85 or '86 and ran into the SPC Blevins, mentioned in the other postings. He used to be SGT Blevins when I was in B Btry. He got out and came back in a few years later - lost rank though.

The Bn was deactivated in about 1992.

When where you in Bravo Battery? I was there from 12/83 through 07/85 in the 1st A&T under Lt. Kicullen, later under Lt. Windsor. Our initial platoon sergeant was SFC Spillman. Capt. Baumanis was our Battery Commander, a West Point-er.

I was in Bravo Battery from Feb 75 until about Apr 76, then moved to Service Battery until going onto Bn staff in Jun 77.

When I visited the Bn AO in '85 or '86 that was after about a 7 year break in service and a branch change from Field Artillery to Medical Corps....I don't miss the NRAS duty or the Sureity Program!

Hello. I was stationed at Fliegerhorst Svc Btry from 10/83 to 10/84. I remember Capt. Baumanis from Bravo.Does anyone remember Capt Ross from Svc Btry? Was anyone on the 1984 test firing mission to Crete? I have some great photos from that mission if anyone would like a copy. This is a great site. Look forward to hearing from anyone from those long past days.

I think that I remember SFC Terlaje.

Do you remember who your firing platoon leader was (in OCT 77)?

I remember a LT Sanderson and I think that there was a C Battery Commander who later (after '78) was severly injured during REFORGER. I think it was a bad head injury and he had to be medically retired.

I was stationed with the 1/32 FA Lance Bn from 1990 to 1992. (Bravo Btry)

I still keep in touch with Dug Miniutes; if you were in Bravo, you remember Dug.

Look forward to hearing from anyone from those days.

I was in Bravo Battery in the 1st A&T under Lt. Windsor, SSG. Cottle from 12/83 through 07/85. Capt. Petrik just took over in 05/85. Any other old timers at your time?

I was in 1/32 from Apr 89 to Dec 91. I was a BTRY FDC Chief and HQ Platoon Sgt. The 1SGT was 1SGT Taylor, Don't remember the BC's name off hand though. I'm retired now living in Lawton/Ft. Sill. Still see some of the old Lance Guy's around town every once in a while.

I remember one live fire in White Sands that went a little werong. Somebody has pics of that and I would love to get copies! 1BN/32FA 12/85-1/88 Svc Battery, I remember belew, lonnergan, and our host, I might not rememebr the spellings. I was under Sgt Doyle aka Horse Cock.
Hello to all!!

Doyle, Lonnergan, and Belew?  Sound familiar.  Speaking of which I think that's Belew standing beside me in formation.  He had a black eye...think he had a rough nite at Armando's...I think that's what's was called -- the small pizza joint outside the gate by the whore house (Rendezvous?).

I was in the 1/32 from 1976 - 1978. I was an acting sgt in assembly & transport A-Btry. I was there with Ssgt. Esker, Btry commander was Captain Morrison. Man - this is a long time ago and names have faded.

Anybody know the whereabouts of Raymond L. Stone III?

What happened to everybody when the Lance was decommissioned?

Craig
10/21/2002

When Lance was decommisioned, It was time for my re-enlistment so I changed MOS's. Some people went back to their secondary MOS, and some just reclassed into MLRS, which is what most of the units transferred into.

RICK DOWNING, I WAS WITH HEADQUATERS BATTER FROM '76 TO '79 . I WAS A GENERATOR MECHANIC, WORKING MOSTLY ON THE 5 KW's, PULLED BEHIND THE RAT RIGS. DID YOU KNOW MIKE 'LOBO' FISHER?

Rick Dowing
05/06/2003

Greg,

No - I'm not familiar with Mike Fisher. I didn't know too many folks in the HQ Btry. I knew some guys in B and C Btry but didn't have many dealings with the other batteries.

Some names of folks are sort of coming back to me: SSgt Battle, SSgt Nunez, SFC Woofter, Lt. Lee, Lt. Porter, Lt. Carol, Cpt. Morrison, Cpt. Fields (early-on). Some of the guys were Ray Stone, Kevin Backer, Chris Weber, A fella we called "Red", shees now my mind is going blank. It was a long time ago.

We went to Crete at least twice that I can remember. Spent a lot of time in the field the last year after we got the new batalion commander - he must've been gunnin for general or something.

I enjoyed Germany for the most part. My wife and I used to go to Weisbaden and Frankfurt a lot to go to the PX and other military stores there. The drive was great. We used to take a lot of those one day weekend bus tours they offered. And, of course, we spent way too much time with our friends drinking way too much German beer.

BINDING was the brand we liked the most. I've always wondered why you never see it here is the US.

This site brings back a lot of memories. More memories seem to come back each time I visit here.

HEY RICK, THANKS FOR THE REPLY. I DRANK AN AWFUL LOT OF BINDING BEER. I USED TO GO TO A GASTHUAS EVERYBODY CALLED ELMERS. I CAN'T REMEMBER NOW THE REAL NAME OF THE PLACE, BUT ELMER AND HIS WIFE RAN THE PLACE. THERE WERE'NT TOO MAY AMERICANS THAT KNEW ABOUT THE PLACE. THE FOOD, AND THE BEER, WERE ALWAYS GREAT. SOMETIMES I WISH I HAD STAYED IN, AND SPENT MORE TIME IN FRG.

Hey Gregg -

I think our favorite hangout was a place called the "Cherry Tree". Sort of an outdoor Gasthaus overhung with trees although I'm pretty sure they weren't cherry trees.

We virtually lived at the place. We would often go there before formation in the morning and knock back a bottle of Kiellergeister wine on the way to Fliegerhorst for formation - then run two miles - Ha! Those were the days weren't they?

Was searching for some castle pictures this morning, started entering names of castles I had visited while stationed at Fleigerhorst from 79-81. I was in Service battery 1/32 and hated every minute. Now, over 20 years ago, I am nostalgic for The Cheery Tree, Binder beer, and Italian food at that restaurant right off the base where "relatives" of the owner would work for a time while recovering from unexplained gunshot wounds received back home in Italy.

At the time, I was the only E2 in the battalion who live in the barracks and had my own POV.

Mike Watkins from N Carolina send me a note if you get this.

ANYBODY REMEMBER MIKE LOBO" FISHER FROM HEADQUATERS BATTERY? HE WAS A MECHANIC WHEN I WAS THERE, FRO 76 TO 79.

Paul
05/29/2003

Honest John No that's not a statement. In 1965, the designation 1/32 FA was an Honest John (Rocket) Bn. I probably have the unit crest and maybe a little history of the unit laying around somewhere. The Kaserne (base in German)seems to have survived a lot better than Ernst Ludwig Kaserne (Darmstadt) where I was transfered to the 3/80 which was a Sargeant Missile Bn. That Kaserne has a rich history, e.g. home of the "Atomic Canon" at one point, then FA, then the Sargeant and Hawk Bn.'s in the mid 60's. BTW, both Kasernes had underground facilities. I think that Ernst Ludwig is the older of the two sites.

Ahhh....I remember the days. I was with the 1/32 from Feb 75 - Feb 78. I was with B Btry and was the Chief Surveyor for the battery. Loved the tour there as it was much better than with a gun battalion. Retired from the army in 89. BTW, ran into MAJ Sandy Morrison at the Presidio in San Francisco.

To Dave Hampton:

That must be the same Sandy Morrison who was the Battery Commandder when I was stationed at Fliegerhorst. He was a captain then. I don't know if he ultimately retired from the army or not.

Greg & Rick,
Good to hear from you. Yes Rick, that was the same Sandy Morrison who was the commander of A Btry (if I remember correctly) and was a CPT at the time. The last 6 1/2 years of my career I was with a California Army National Guard unit and Sandy Morrison was an advisor to the guard. He and I had a wonderful time reliving many of the "good" ol' days at Fliegerhorst. I must admit though, that after 20 years, six months, and ten days (but who was counting) of service in the Army that many of the names have faded and have been lost to my memory. Finding this site and making contact with you guys will hopefully fire my tiny little brain and bring back all those names of those we knew. As a surveyor I had the opportunity to know many of the people in all of the batteries and I can see their faces but for the life of me cannot remember their names, dammit! In 81 I was sent back to Germany again and had the opportunity to visit Fliegerhorst and renew some friendships of those who were still there although getting ready to rotate at that time. Do you guys remember the parking lot in the rear of the battalion. It was me and my survey section that laid that out and had the fun job of painting it also :-( so much fun...

I look forward to hearing from you again and am hoping my memory will be jogged!
