I am still looking for a repley from Greg D. and John L. 2/42FA Crailshiem FRG. I would like to set up a REUNION get together with anyone in 2/42FA from 1981 to 2000 even after all the changes. So anyone that knows someone in the unit please email back to lazyandcrazy@netzero.net. If someone has an old unit roster it would be helpfull to get this done.

Hey David,

I have tried to e-mail you to and can't get through for some reason.

Man those were the best army days of my career. I remember we were trying to tunnel our way to that supposedly underground NAZI airfield under 1st A&T's section room with a sledge hammer and a tankers bar. We never got through but we had some fun.

Getting caught in the Stern with Cook is something else I remember. We got caught Friday night and somebody put us on extra duty over the weekend. Well when we went for our JAG appointment in Ansbach they told us that since we had been punished before we got to see JAG that they couldn't do anything else to us. We were just PFC's I think and COL VanHorn was so pissed of he cussed us out right there in his office. He turned purple and told us that and I quote (I still remember it) "We f***ed up this time...but if I ever see either of you in front of my f****ing desk again you'll see my do it f****ing right". "1SG Watson get'em the f**k out of my office". He scared the shit out of us man. That guy was crazy.

I visited Crailsheim back in 95 I think it was (my wife is from there) after everything was leveled except the gym and housing. I walked around for a little while checking things out. I got a piece of A BTRY's orderly room. Remember how the doors were outlined in Artillery red. I broke off about a 6" piece of it. Still got it to.

Some real good times!

Wow you guys are some names from the past! I was in SVC(Circus) Btry in '86 and A Btry in '89. Hey DeBord, weren't you my section chief at one time in circus btry? With Womack and Hall?

Greg DeBord
12/22/2004

HOLY SHIT! Yeah I was SVC for awhile. I think the CDRs name was CPT Law wasn't it? And, didn't we have that liitle island (can't remember his name)guy as a 1SG?

I was sent to Service after telling the A-Brty 1SG that he wasn't running the Btry right. I can't remember his name either, he came over from HQ Btry (tall blond guy)...He had the whole btry up in the dayroom on a Friday night because he found some leaves in the bed of somebodys 880 (remember those). I came in the next Monday and was sent to Service Btry.

Wow this is great Chris. I wondered what ever happened to you.

I served in SVC Btry 2-42 FA at McKee Barracks in Crailsheim from April 1976 to June 1977. The Army was a real shambles back then, nothing like the excellent force it is today.

Well it is amazing what one stumbles onto in this world. I was with the 2/42 back in the late 70's.

Greg, I was in SVC Btry from Jul 86-Jan 88. CPT Laws was the BC and he was always pissed off at me because I answered to the Bn Exec (MAJ Kenas) and the Bn Cdr (LTC Thomas G. Wilson). I replaced CW2 Harriet Simpson after she failed a 17th FA Bde Command Inspection (CI) "re-inspection". When CPT Laws started messing with me too much, I'd find problems with his Battery Hand receipt, and I could (almost) dish out as much as he could, even though he outranked me. That "tall blonde 1SG from HQ Btry" ended up as a fairly senior SGM at Fort Leavenworth in the late 90's. I ran into him at Bell Hall while I was assigned to the Command and General Staff College. I'm pretty sure that he about to retire, I can still see his face, but can't quite recall his name.

Steve Gerding

That SGM was George Jessen. Was he the HHB 1SG? i knew he was the S3 NCO for the time i was there.. '86-90.

Randy Shannon
08/19/2005

No, he wasn't the HHB 1SG, you're right, he was the Bn ops NCOIC. Where were you in 2-42 at the time? I'm sure we must have run into each other.

Steve Gerding

I was in Alpha Battery right up until Desert Shield.. then went back to work at the Lance Branch until they reclassed everybody.. We had a female commander, CPT Dye.. I went by Crailsheim last year on vacation. It is totally changed. They closed the Kasserne and gave it back to the government who promptly used it to house the new immigrants. We talked to our old landlord and they weren't too happy with the results. Guess crime went up a bit. The only thing really standing now is the housing area. Looks like they pretty much leveled all the old buildings on the post.

I remember Top Jessen. He seemed to be too smart to be enlisted, not that I'm ragging on my fellow enlisted guys, but the guy damn near ran that Btry into the ground, and didn't know it. Smart guy, but didn't have "enlisted sense" to know any better. C Btry had two good ones when I was there(85-88) 1SG Gilroy and 1SG "Rawlo" Anderson. Ah, the M880, the wiring on the one we had, 2nd fire C Btry, was so fouled up, everytime you turned on the "blackout drive" all the lights would flash like a damn x-mas tree. The only redeeming quality was the 318 engine in it, but we put so much strain on it from all the stupid shit we hauled that it really just wasn't strong enough, horsepower wise. Randy, good hearing from you too and hopefully we can get something going on this reunion.

Would love to see a reunion. Please let me know what you come up with. I am currently in Belgium, assigned to a Signal Battalion. I went to the Belgian War Museum in Brussels and it was kinda strange to see a Lance Missile with an HE warhead on display.. It was sitting next to a Nike Hercules. Definately brought back some great memories of Crete. I was posted in central Greece for 4 years prior to coming to Belgium. Chania is still a fabulous place to visit.

We had a small mini-reunion in DC about two months ago and everyone had a good time (and no arrests!) so now we're going to try to plan a full blown reunion in 2007 or 2008.

So send me you info and any addresses/info of any other 2/42 FA guys you might have contact with. I'm looking for Terry Teague and Estes Smith

Take Care and Nuke Em!
