Anyone out there stationed at the 83rd USAFAD Montebaur Germany, 1986 - 1989?

Chris Wright

I was in Montabaur from 82-85

I was stationed there from Oct 1979 to Jan 1982. That is back when the wild crew was there. I was known as "The Animal" even by the polizei. Good thing I had a good drinking relationship with them or I would have spent a lot of time downtown in the jail.

I was there during 1985-1988. When I arrived we had a Frik and Frak cdr and 1SG. The sorryest leadership team I have ever worked with. SFC Ruffolo and CPT Herald were there when I left. They squared the place away for the soldiers. Good lessons to learn!

Mark, copy and paste this link. You will find some 83rd pictures in the "Photo Album". Some were taken before you arrived. Some you may recognize...are you still living in Georgia?

Sam,
I was stationed at the 83rd USAFAD from '89 to '92, pretty much closed down the place. We had the same type of leadership problems then. Went to your site and did not see any 83rd pics and do you have to have a Bell South account to log in? Also I was at the 84th USAFAD, check out our webpage: http://www.84thusafad.org/

Hey Sam,

How are you doing? Last time we spoke was 99 - 2000? How is the family? Yes, I still live in Georgia, Lilburn. I finished school and got my BBA and working in software development.

What is going on with you?

HEY Mark!!
Well, I PCSed to Jackson, MS in 2002. I retired in 2004. I am now a JROTC instructor. Awesome job. I make 14-18yr old kids do pushups! Basically have the summer off! We lived in Lawrenceville from '94'97. I recruited all over Gwinnette Co. Wow...it's amazing how time has gone by. The family is fine. Congrats on your degree. I finally got mine too. Mark do you have any pictures of the Det? If so let me know!! I trying to put together a little documentary. Do you stay in touch with anyone from the Det? I have a picture of you and me in Crete! I will send it you if you want!

Take care! Sam

Don't really know what the problem is?!! I can see the 83rd Pictures on my computer, but can't on others?! Weird Shit!. Ken I didn't know you were at the 83rd too?! Before my time. I was there 85-88. I will try to post the 83rd pics else where. I have some good ones! (OVER)

Yeah Sam,

That was my first duty assignment. I was there from OCT 1979 to Jan 1982. I had a great time there. Montabaur was a great city and speaking the language (disco deutsche) helped me to get along with out any problems. I had a few German friends in all of the clubs.

Hey Sam,

Good to hear you are doing good. I laughed when you said you teach 18 - 19 year olds and make them do push ups. At one time, when I last spoke with you, I was also in contact with old Floyd Morgan. I have not spoke with him since. I will need to dig up my old 83rd pics and send to you. I did not see any 83rd pics on the site as well. Yes, send me the pic of you and me in Crete. I will keep in touch!

It is good to see that some people carried on my legacy at the 83rd in Montabaur. I was there from 1979 to 1982. I was known as "Animal" from the Muppets. I was the party animal of the unit and everyone in the disco's of Montabaur knew me well. I was the only one to wear a cowboy hat into the disco. When I was not on guard duty, I was partying. Thank goodness for sleep time at the site. I hope everyone enjoyed their stay in Montabaur. I have some great memories from there.

Hello Ken Gove do you happen to remember Bob Benner ?Ronnie Knight ?

Ken Gove
02/02/2007

No. They were not there during my time. I left in January of 1982. They must have gotten there after I left. Some of the people I remember are SGT Meadows, SSG Alvarez, SGT Nasidka, SSG Johnson, SGT Elliot. Did you ever meet Tim Friske? He worked at the signal site and after he left Montabaur, he went home and got into a bad auto accident and almost died. He came back to live in Germany, around the area of Montabaur.

John
02/13/2007

Hi Ken, some of the names sound familiar to my wife she is from Montabaur !She grew up in the area where most Americans lived of the base ! Did you stay in touch with Tim Friske ?Bob Benner was my Wifes Brother in Law!

Ken
02/14/2007

No John, I did not keep in touch with Tim Friske. I wish I had because he was a great guy. I used to go sit with him in the signal site and watch Benny Hill tapes a lot when i got bored and didn't go out on the town. There was a big black guy there at that time. I just can't remember his name. He was pretty cool too. Tim used to hang out with a German guy with long hair. I can't remember his name. also see if she remembers a guy named Darryl marshall. He lived off post across from the kaserne in the apartments. He was married to a German woman as was Bob Meadows.

John

Hey Chris, how the hell are you? Long time no see. I had heard Bob Benner had passed away, I am not sure if that was true or not. I got out of active duty in 1992 with the draw down. I am now a CW2 in a NG unit in El Paso. Of course it is FA but M109's. Hope you are well and doing okay.

drop me a line and let me know if your alive.
